Rosa- A lot of my friends are straightedge. I’m straightedge. To a large extent, straightedge is a positive thing in that it helps our communities to resist poisoning ourselves. But one of the problems I see, even in posi circles and radical circles comprised of straightedge kids, is the dismissal of the harsh realities that people with addictions suffer. I am straightedge but I am also a tweaker and a junkie and these are struggles that I continue to face on a daily basis. When I hear kids who are lucky enough to not be born into addiction (whether literally or metaphorically through poverty and other circumstances) railing against folks who don’t have that privilege, it bothers the shit out of me. Whether its some guy (cause lets be honest. Its always a guy) saying “fuck addiction” into the mic at a show or some other guy talking about how fucking stupid it is to do drugs or be addicted to them, it amounts to basically the same thing: oppressive bullshit. Some people may disagree with this, but I would go so far as to call it ableism. Addiction is classified as a disease by MANY people who suffer from it, myself included. Long story short: if you want to be straightedge then that’s awesome, but don’t presume to know a god damn thing about what its like to struggle with addiction if you aren’t an addict.
lyrics
You talk so loud. Safely. At a distance. Pontificating from your hardcore soapbox. Preaching against those whose backs you stand upon. I can’t hear you through your entitlement. You yell so loud into the mic. Oh so passionate. You trivialize struggles you’ve never had to face. If you won’t see other people’s pain, then X up and shut the fuck up.
